I need some help with my H.
I just got this tractor. I have had a few H's in the past. The serial number index on this site claims this tractor is a 48-49.
All of my H's have been 48-49, but ever one has been very different.
Here is the serial number FBH-252610
IS this indeed a 48-49?

This tractor has 2 fuel tanks. A small one for gas, and the larger for??? I am assuming you would start it on gasoline, then switch to kerosene or something more economical for that time?
It also has a knob/lever/rod that goes to the front of the motor and attaches to a lever in front of the magneto. What does this do? Is it a timing retarder?
Any help and opinions would be appreciated.

Brian what you have at the front of you tractor is the rod that used to connect to the shutters to open or close them . Your shutters may be long gone. From the rod you described it should have another rod in behind which follows the contour of the tractor right back up to the gas tank bracket which held a small crank which was used to wind the shutters open or closed. When burning distillates became less popular many farmers removed the excess baggage..the heat shield, the shutters and even the gallon gasoline tank and plugged the switch at the tank(fuel shut off). These items are hard to find. Good luck with the H from Mike in Exeter Ontario

the dual fuel tanks are for gasoline and Distillate, Distillate was used by farmers during the war because gasoline was rationed. After the tractor was started and ran for a minute or two then you switched over to moonshine. I dont know about that lever thing you mentioned.

Brian as you surmised the small tank is for gas, and the larger was for distillate (kerosene). The tractor was warmed up on gas then switched over. My H has a similar rod to lever at the base of the ditributor. I beleive on all these distillate tractors that was the hookup for the radiator shutters, and not the magneto advance that you thought.

I forgot to add that according to my reference source, your tractor was produced in 1947.

My reference book also stated this to be a 1947 model
