I have a farmall C, the starter will turn but won't engage the engine. What makes the starter engage the engine on a Farmall C?

Check the mechanicals, too. Mine broke the shaft internally, so the armature would go around but the little gear wouldn't.

After that repair, I ended up running a ground wire from the battery to the starter attaching bolt - no more starting problems.

Another thing to consider is the condition of the electricals. If the battery is not up to full song, if the connections are not shiny-clean, if the cables are not zero- or one-gauge in size, or if the starter is getting weak, you will probably have problems(I'm assuming the system is still 6v). Make sure all of your connections are up to snuff and the switch on the starter itself is making good contact.

When checking electrical connections remember that the ground circuit has to be good too. Thats all the iron to iron connections between the starter and bell housing etc. Fresh paint or old rust can create a situation where you will get continuity but not a good enough connection to move enough amps. It is a bit like trying to power the starter w/ a 12 ga. wire. I cheated and ran the batt ground direct to the starter mounting bolt.

You probably have a weak bendix spring. Another possibility is the teeth are worn on either the starter, or ring gear. You will have to pull the starter off to check the problem.

Pull the starter from the tractor. You will see a gear tooth assembly and spring. When you apply juice to the starter, the centrifugal force of the starter should push that gear assembly into the teeth on the flywheel. When you release the juice, that spring pushes the gear away from the flywheel. You may simply need to clean and lubricate that area. You will quickly beable to determine if the starter teeth and ring gear teeth are worn.
