I am restoring a '48 "H". According to my parts manual, in the "Suffix Letter Code" section, the serial number on the tractor should have certain suffixes to the serial number to indicate options such as X1=Gasoline engine. My serial number on the plate consists of six digits and nothing else. The tractor number does match the engine number, but no sign of "Suffix Letter Codes". Is this unusual or the stamping just depended on how the stamper felt that day?

Excuse me for changing the subject but with the experts around I'd like to ask about our 460 with the serial number 4286 SY. If I could find my copy of Guy's book I wouldn't have to ask but would like to know what SY means and about what year it is. Thanks.

Standard at that time was duel fueled, so no stamp.

I just looked at the frame plate on Old Rusty H. It was originally a duel fuel tractor. There is no suffix code after the serial number on Old Rusty.
