The other day I got to check out a 656 parked next to a 460 (not mine, both Farmalls. The flange of the 656 was almost twice as thick and the housing was longer as well, how much trouble is it to swap housings and axels to a 460? As I do not have a mounted picker yet there is no rush just courious, and maybe it will help sombody else.

They won't fit The bolt pattern while similar is different and the internal dimensions are different also to account for the much wider and slightly smaller diameter bull gears. The reason the 656 axle housings were made heavier was to accommodate the ROPS frame, the idea being if a tractor rolled over it wouldn't break the axle housings also

The axle's are differentwhere they go into the bullgears. What size of axles do you have in the 460? Are the 2-1/2 or 2-3/4?

I don't know if that would work, but it sounds like a good idea. My 460 has a Freeman loader that has mounts on the rear axle. It had cracks on it 6" long on each side and halfway across the bottom. The previous owner brazed it up. They must have hit a tree with the loader and that force broke the rear castings. The front of the bucket is caved in and that explains my theory. They are not leaking however, but if the 656 housings would work, it would proably be a lot stronger and look a whole lot better.

Do you have the heavy or the light axels? lights look like H axels, heavys same dia as 656, and I think 2 3/4 inch across.
