My 41' H has just had the carb rebuilt, the packing at the bottom of the power needle located on the bottom of the float bowl had disetegrated so I replaced it. Pretty straight forward. Well now I can't get the engine to run for more than a few minutes without having to clean the plugs. When I remove them they're wet and sooty. I've adjusted the air fuel mix and the power needle while it ran and seemed to run fine for a short time then it dies. The carb is an IH model. Any pointers appreciated, I hope this is enough to go by. I've used my I&T manual during this proceedure. Regards to all.

sounds like the problem I had with a H carb. rebuild years back.I always use a light hand at adjusting needles, no matter where I set it,it would run rich, I backed off the nut and the needle hadn't threaded through the packing. After a couple of taps to start threads, reset nut and needle. Runs good since.

Thanks Bob for the info but that's not the culprit, the needle seats fine. I can start it one time with no problem, then after about ten seconds I try to restart it and it's like there's no fuel getting to the plugs. But on inspecting them, they are wet with gas etc. I clean and dry them again, and retry to start it and bingo.

Vince - what spark plugs are you using? If you're not using a "hot" plug like a Champion D-21 or equivalent (like AC C86), you're problem could be caused by too cold plugs. Also if your ignition wires are RF surpression (carbon core resistor) type, TRASH 'EM and replace with plain old copper core wires!

Also are you certain the plugs are wet with gas and not water? If they're wet with moisture, water in the gas supply or a slow-leaking head gasket could be the culprit.

Thanks for the note again. I don't believe it's anything other than gas (smells like it). I do believe that is all thats is causing my headaches. I didn't think to check my cables though for the carbon core, may do that tonite. Thanks and regards...

You're definitely running rich. If adjusting the carb doesn't correct the problem, do this: With the motor stopped and the sediment bowl shutoff valve open, pull the tube off the carb air inlet elbow. If gas drips from the carb air inlet it can be one of several things: The float is sticking, the float level is adjusted too high, the float has sunk, or the float needle valve has something caught in it and it isn't closing fully.

You'll have to reset the float bowl height if you changed out the float valve seat. Could be the gas level in the bowl is too high. BTDT.

Check to make sure that the choke is staying open. There is a ball bearing that goes between the choke side plate, where the choke rod connects, and the carburetor body.

If that is not the culprit, after you have it running, lean the high speed until the RPM starts faltering, and then open it back up 1/2 turn.
