Just bought my first tractor today. Its a 1940 M that used to burn kerosene and has an M&W hand clutch. It looks rough but the tin is straight and its all there excect for headlights. It runs pretty well i would say, no smoke or anything. What are some things that I can do to start caring for it? Like, what kind and how much oil would i need to change the oil? I appreciate any suggestions.

Hey, great choice and it sounds like you have a rare one. I'm more known for my wisdom about Farmall tractors around here, but I don't compare to some of the guys on this thing. I am only 15, and bought a '53 Super M a year ago last Feburary, so it'll be 3 years next Feb. I have it valued at 3000, but got it for 900 at auction. Needless to say, I had many friends and family at my neck just about yelling at me. (It was all jealousy. My family is ALL Farmall) I have had a few bumps in the road during my ownership, but once I get it restored (which, believe it or not guys, is just painting) it'll be my pride and joy. I congradulate you on your purchase, and join the very special club of individuals, the ones that own Farmalls.

Jeff, I have a 44 M and it is older than I am. Best first move is to get the manuals. Binder Books has them and they are excellent. Get the whole set if you can. They are all excellent. Also I think The Red meant non-detergent oil on an older tractor. I,m sure he will be back on to clarify.

Bart I meant detergent. When I get ready to change oil on an H purchase, I drop the oil pan. If it is sludged up, I clean it and the oil intake screen on the oil pump. I pull the pushrod chamber plate and clean that chamber. I also pull the valve cover and clean the rocker arm assembly and top of the head. I then plan on changing oil and filter every 20 hours until it clears up. Amazingly when I pulled the pushrod chamber on Old Rusty H, it was very clean.

Red is the pushrod chamber plate the panel on the side of the block that is about 4-5 inches wide and held in place by 10 or 12 bolts. How do you clean it once it is removed? Is there a gasket I would need to replace? What would you see that that would signal some type of problem.What is the best way to clean the sludge from under the valve cover? Will NAPA have the oil pan and valve cover gasket? I have a Super M that I want to go thru such as you talked about and clean, reset and troubleshoot as needed. Thanks for your help in advance.

Pawnee the pushrod chamber cover is the one behind the oil filter can and the distributor. The one with all the bolts behind the carburetor is the water chamber plate.

Gasket wise your local NAPA may or may not have the pages for parts for the Farmall tractors. The one I go to west of Indy has quite a few parts but you have to order them.

Case-IH gaskets are of very good quality. Just give Ken Updike a hollar at 866-Farmall or the old number of 608-455-2411.

On the 1951 H project of two years ago, the pushrod chamber looked like a hog wallow. I used paper towels and started digging out all the oily sludge. It took about a half day if I recall.

Good luck and let us know what you find in the pan. If it is pretty clean, the rest of the engine should be the same. The IH oil pan gaskets are very good quality. As technique I use Permatex High-Temp RTV silicone gasket maker on the oil pan rim and the bottom of the engine block. After you bolt up the pan, let it sit for 48 hours before adding oil. About every H I have worked on are notorious for tiny leaks on the front of the oil pan. When I started using the Permatex, that problem no longer existed.

I'm one too,
My first real tractor was and still is a '41 M, when you drain the tranny pour the old oil through a screen and see what (if Any) metal fragments turn up. I found a piston skirt in my oil pan which led to a total engine rebuild , double edged sword glad to have a new motor but my rear pocket is still squealing like that ol' boy in Deliverance.

Congrats! My first tractor was an M also, a 1945. When you drain the old transmission oil, I recommend you get a big plastic tote to drain it in. If the tranny is full, the oil will come out in a heavy flow at first and switching out five gallon pails can still leave a good bit spilt. -BTD

Get an Owner's Manual and Service Manual. Even better is a Blue Ribbon Service Manual that IH published for their own mechanics, you can find them on ebay once in a while. Get a tuneup kit (points and condensor, along with a timing light and feeler gauge) and learn how to put it in. Also consider getting an oil pan gasket and cleaning out the pan before you change the oil, there's probably an inch of sludge in the bottom.

Congradulations! I think I saw your post where you were going to pick the tractor up at an auction. The first tractor I ever bought was an M. I had $1000 dollars in my pocket, but I was bidding like I had the whole bank behind me. I got it for $1000 even. If the other guy would have bid another $50 I wouln't have been able to get it. Just take your time getting all of the old oil and grease out of the engine and tranny. I had to let my one H drain for a week, and I still dont think it all drained out. One trick to thin out the transmission oil is to add kerosene. This will help it drain. On a cold November day in Minnesota, I could barely pull my 15-30 around the yard with a 1206. I added a cup of kerosene to it and it helped greatly.

Congratulations Jeff! The engine takes 8 quarts of detergent SAE 30. The cup on the oil bath air cleaner will take almost a quart of SAE 30. The transmission/rear end takes 13 gallons of 90W.

Dick I have never had a problem convertings Hs to detergent oil. I simply plan on changing the oil and filter every 20 hours until it cleans out. I clean off the top of the head, the rocker arm chamber and the oil pan. That leaves very little sludge to clean out in the engine.
