One comment I haven't seen yet is that all replacement service parts blocks were drilled with the hole for the dipstick. Possibly this unit has had the block reeplaced. At the dealership where I worked we regularly drilled a lot of them to install a dipstick.

both of my 1948 MD's came with dipsticks. The only petcock is on the injector pump. No petcocks on the oil pan. I tend to agree with Guy Fay, it was model by model thing.

My 52 Super M has dipstick and petcocks both. It also has a 281 cubic inch engine instead of the 264. Still can't figure that one out.

You have a 450 engine block that had the dipstick. We had a 450 gas and It had the dipstick without the petcocks.

Kerosene-Distillate engines always had petcocks. Eventually, gasolene only tractors go the dipsticks. Don't know when dipsticks started, but its not a model by model thing.

If dipstick is in right side of block IH made a tool kit to drill the block so a dipstick could be added

If this is a dipstick that screws into the hole where the top petcock went, it is probably an after market unit. I have one a SMTA and have seen the same things used on older JD tractors that used petcodls. The base is a square unit and the dipstick screws into it. personnally would as soon have the petcock I think

Engine has probably been replaced with a power unit engine or engine from W-6. I believe both of these have dipsticks, but not certain on W-6.

The W-6 is the "Standard" non-row crop version of the M. Wide front, low profile, used mostly in the west in small grain country. Power units are the engine/clutch only on a stand, used to power generators, sawmills, whatever. You can tell if it is a W-6 engine by finding the engine serial number. If the engine serial number starts with the letters WBKM, then the engine came from a W-6. If UBKM, then it was from a power unit. The M engines serial nos. started with the letters FBKM. On my MD, the engine serial number is on the LH side of the engine block about in the center. Not familiar with the gas engine so don't know exact location of the serial on it.
