My '50 H is smoking pretty good now so I figure its time to help it quit. I'm a little nervous at the propect of splitting the tractor (never done it before). I have the IT service manual and the original owners manual and parts book. I can usually turn a wrench ok and figure stuff out but are there any tips..tricks..cautions..I should be aware of? Really respect the the advice I read on this board..wish I had the expertise of many of the posters so I wouldn't be going 'cold turkey' into this anti-smoking project! Thanks

Before I would do anything I would check the compression.To check the rings and sleeves, #1 check the cyl pressure.#2 then squirt oil into the cyl and check the pressure again. Bad rings or sleeves will give a slightly higher reading when you put oil in the cylinders. I would also check the oil in the aircleaner and make sure it is not too thick as it can get pulled up into the engine and make it smoke that way.Good luck with it!

My H was smoking pretty bad and the oil pressure was pretty low , then It just started knocking . So I decided that it was time for an overhaul. I planned a inframe overhaul but it has turned out otherwise. The crank was too badly scored. I need to split my tractor also.My books say I can not remove my crank with out doing this. I've never split one befor either.
I rounded up some large wood timbers about the size of railroad ties and will crib up the back half under the flywheel housing. I did this awhile back when I removed the front bolster and it works very well.
I did fabricate my own sleeve puller that worked very well but it did take quite a bit of time to build alot of trial fitting and such. Rent one if you can find one to rent!

If you are going to do it right,SPLIT THE TRACTOR!TAKE THE BLOCK AND HEAD AND HAVE THEM CLEANED!Theres no sence in putting new parts into a dirty engine!Take the crank to a professional machine shop and let them check it out before you order your engine kit.You may need to have the crank turned and need different bearing.Also a good machine shop will have the right stuff to pull the sleeves.Some folks think they clean a block out good enough with it still on the tractor but waht about the oil passages,theres still crude in there.You might be able to get by with it,but why chance it.Just my .02!

Before splitting the tractor I would do some checks to make sure it really needs to be done. If you are happy with way the clutch works, no need there to split. If rear seal doesnt leak, no need there either. I would drop the pan first and look at the main bearing and journals. Get your dial indicator out and check the cranks endplay while you are at it. If everything checks out ok, there is really no need to split. Most overhauls are done "inframe". Now on the other hand, if this is a labor of love..... and most of us have been there. Split away, replace cam bearings, freeze plugs, boil the block and head out, turn the crank if its even close to not making limits, and noone will think less of you. I've done them both ways. It kinda depends on how much I like that particular piece of iron. It also makes you an honest man when you tell others you went "completely through it". One of the things I have the most trouble with, is folks replacing rings and bearings and then calling the tractor "completely overhauled" Good Luck

I quess here is a question to ask before you tear your tractor apart. Is it smoking due to burning oil or is it smoking due to running to rich?

better plastic-guage the crank rods and mains might want to have the crank ground if you take entire engine out you can do everything then you will have a new engine depends what are you using it for just for fun then hone the cycls and new rings and a valve job

Thanks all for the advice. Red, I've reviewed your pics and posts many times..have several posts printed out for ref. on this project. I wasn't sure on splitting the tractor..I thought I had to to work on the engine bottom end. With the engine overhaul project would I be wise to do any major clutch service? Currently the clutch/tranny seem to be fine. I am planning on dropping the belly pump to replace seals. Would rather get everything out of the way at once. One more thing..ref. special tools..I've read about the sleeve puller..where can I get/rent one and any other special tools I should try and have? Thanks all..I wouldn't even attempt this without this board and all the experience out there!

Personally I wouldn't worry about clutch disk replacement if it is working fine. Ron Jacobsen can fabricate you a heavy duty sleeve puller for around $100. His email is

While you have the liftall out, carefully look at the crankshaft and counter shaft seals on the transmission. If they are leaking, this is a good time to replace them.

I agree with Dick Davis. You really should not need to split the tractor. Pull the head, drop the pan, and replace the rings. You may want to replace the sleeves. Search the archived articles on this site for great tips and info on replacing rings or both rings and sleeves. You'll need some special tools, but you should not have to split the tractor.

lfrye: Have good manuals and make several small boxes for different parts as you take it apart.. Very frustrating to sort through all when assembling. Too easy to make mistakes. Put all head parts in ONE area..etc. Read some related post in the archives(left side) Some now say that a digital camera befor/during pictures are real handy. Good work area? This may make it a more enjoyable project.Ralph

I haven't done either yet, but... a smoking engine would seem to require an engine overhaul which most generally is done with the block still in the tractor frame. Splitting the tractor would be required for serious clutch/TA/rearend repair. The engine overhaul is a big enough undertaking without the tractor splitting. Just a thought. Dick
