I have recently purchased a 1960 406 tractor with what I believe to be a 221 c.i. 6 cylinder gas engine. The motor was bad when purchased and I'm looking for a replacement motor. I've been told that the engine in a IH 403 combine from approximately the same year is swappable with the 406 engine. Can anyone tell me if this is true? And if so, is there a particular 403 year or motor I should be looking for? Thanks in advance, Randy

My 560 was born a diesel but has been repowered with 6 cyl gas engine from a 403 combine. I was told it was the same CID as the gas engine for the 560, the difference being that the tractor engine had sleeved cylinders and the combine engine was cast. In either case, the CID was more like 283 (not sure..CRS), but considerably larger than 221. Gadget

Gee... this helped me a bunch.
I posted that I was sorry for the typo, it was early and I was thinking about the combine model 403 - (406 vs 460). So I'm sorry to have wasted your time.

I'm sorry, the tractor is an IH 460. To early in the morning and thinking to much about the 403 combine led to operator error.
