Hello...My grandfather bought a new Farmall Tractor after he served in WWII (mid 1940's). It has an offset rear axle and a narrow front end (2 wheels). He used it mostly for corn, oats and hay. It has been sitting in a barn for several years, and I am interested in it since he does not use it anymore. I am hoping to go visit him in a few weeks, but for now I am wondering what anyone's guess is as the model? I know the "B" is probably the closest...but am wondering if any other models had an offset axle and narrow front end?

Thanks all, for the info. I am hoping to get this tractor from my grandfather at some point. He has not used it for at least a few years. I hope to get a small farm of my own in the next year or so and think this would be the perfect tractor to restore and use for my own!

Just a little clarification...the rear axle is not directly in line with the center of the wheels...it is a good bit higher. Is this called an off-center axle? I was told that the A and B were the only Farmall's like this? That, plus the narrow front end, are the only things I can recall about the tractor at this point.

Thanks again!

There should be a small metal plate on theseat bracket on the inside on the left side of the seat. The serial number will probably start with either a B or a B.N.

If it's a B the serial number should start with FAB if it's a BN it should start with FABN. I have been told that some real early BN's used FAA as a prefix like an A, but I haven't seen that myself.

Justin, It sounds like a B or BN. An easy way to tell is look at the mounting for the right side of the seat. If the right side seat bracket is mounted to the same bolts as the right side fender it is likely a BN. If the right side seat bracket is on a small piece mounted to the top of the axle, it is likely a B. Some of us on here have some experience with B's & BN's if we can help, just ask. I wish I could find the BN my Dad bought after he came back from the south pacific after that war. Don't let that one get away. Good luck!

Justin,

A family tractor must be the best one to get for restoration. A good guess is that your Grandfather's is either a B or BN, although neither has an offset rear axle. It may have seemed so because of an off-center seat. They both had a narrow front end. The only '40s vintage Farmalls with offset rear axles were the A, Super A, and Cub. All 3 had wide fronts.

I hope you are able to get it and preserve it for future generations.
