I have two Farmall H's, a '41 and a '42. The PTO's are different. The PTO on one has gear case which protrudes from the axle housing about 6", on the other, the PTO case is only about 1" thick. What is the difference?

Mike the flatter one was on the early Hs with 1 1/8" diameter spline. They then went to the protruding design with the industry standard 1 3/8" diameter spline. When I really don't know. Old Rusty H (1942) has the flatter design but has an add on 1 3/8" extension.

They did make the flatter style of PTO in 1 3/8" spline as well as the 1 1/8". Early H's had the smaller spline. My 41 M has the flat style with the larger spline. They changed the PTO to the longer version in order to meet ASTM standard PTO to Drawbar location. Going from memory it is 14 " from the end of the PTO to the center of the hitch hole horrizontally and if I remember right 6" or 8 " to the top of the drawbar from the center of the PTO vertically. I also do not have any idea when they changed styles.
