Help again with my "A" Farmall. In road gear the transmission is noisy. Worse going down hill. Pulling up hill it is quiet. Also it has a clicking sound in reverse. Not being familiar with red tractors, I don't really know what they are supposed to sound like. Any help will be apreciated. Later

Thank Guys, I did put in a little heavier lube oil today and it quitend down some. I checked all the gears in the trans when I had it all apart. All looked good for a 60 year old.
Thanks again. Later

I agree with Ralph and Red Dave; 4th gear tends to be noisy. You might check and change the fluid in the tranny, if you haven't already; changing it and replacing it with the correct fluid may quiet it down somewhat.

It's hard to say if there is anything wrong without actually hearing how much noise you have. I know my B and every other A,B, BN, I have ever run sings a loud familiar tune in 4th gear so what you have may be normal. These straight-cut gears tend to be loud, - loud and strong. I found that a can or two of STP in with the transmission oil seems to help some with the sound level, but they are never what I call quiet.

The clicking you hear is more than likely the result of a missing tooth on the reverse gear. I had a Super C that was missing a tooth on the bull gear and would click in all gears. One click for every revolution of the tire (if I remember right).

Norman: Noise is common as that is due to the type of straight cut in making the gears. Yes yours could be having trouble but just check another model and I'll guess you will hear the same thing. A huge amount of use can make it louder as bearings do loosen up too. A clicking sound isn't quite right but reverse isn't used too much.. ralph
