Sorry for the off topic/forum question here. I've learned much from all you helpful folks on this group over the past couple of years.

My question is: Does anyone know if there is a group devoted to Wisconsin 4 cylinder engines? Specifically a VH4D? I'm trying to get one running, and am looking for some direction.

Thanks, and sorry for the off topic question.

Wisconsin engines!!! I was about 4 years old and my uncle Roy had his white beans pulled and winrowed. A strong wind came up and rolled the rows together and up against a fence. That's how his day was going. My dad came to rescue him and we kids helped pulling beans away from the fence to form some kind of a row. After several hours of this Uncle Roy rolled out the Case combine with a Wisconsin engine mounted on it ...a crank start engine..well you can guess it wouldn't start and on that day some 49 years ago I learned all about Wisconsin engines with every description and cuss word that you could throw at an inate object..and my Uncle Roy was a clean speaking guy. He died about six years ago and as I sat at the funeral I remembered that day like it was yesterday. I hold no malice towards Wisconsin Engines...had one on a swather once..anyway that's what stirred me about"Re:A little off topic Wisconsin Engine question So good luck in restoring the Wisconsin, now you have a story to go with it!!!

Michael:

Sounds just like my Wisconsin engine experience!

My uncle Ray had a baler with a Wisconsin engine, also a crank start, when I was a kid. He'd be in the middle of a baling job when, without fail, the thing would quit. Then I had the "pleasure" of watching him sweat trying to start that engine in the hot sun, or with rain threatening, with that short hand crank. I don't think I ever felt sorrier for anyone.

The engine NEVER started right away. Sometimes it would start eventually, sometimes not. The times the old Wisconsin started were real vocabulary lessons as you described. When it wouldn't start it usually collected a few more sheet metal dents from a severe beating with its own crank.

Uncle Ray put an end to that nonsense by buying a PTO-driven baler about 1970. That's probably the best investment he ever made. The phrase "Wisconsin engine" still makes me cringe!

Mark, I'm sure there is a thousand stories out there and you're right I cringe too when I hear "Wisconsin engine" You described them to a tee...they'd just quit for no reason and it was a dice toss you would get it started..maybe the next day it would start right up on the first crank. I 'm sure I'm not the only little boy who learned to swear around his farmer Dad or uncle or neighbour. It would be fun to hear some other stories about "Wisconsin engines"

Dave

Just as Bob M said, I am very familar with the VH4D as I still use at least one of them on an almond sweeper. I rebuilt one last fall to finish the harvest (typical farmer story). I have the manuals and am willing to share my experience or lack of experience with this forum. Ask your questions either here or on the stationary engine forum on this site and we will see if we can help.

Dave - I'm not aware of a Wisconsin engine group (but then my wife/kids keep reminding me I'm not aware of a LOT of stuff!) However I've messed with Wisconsin VH4D and THD (2 cyl) motors on bean combines, generators, etc and am somewhat familiar with their workings. Post back your questions and I'll try to help...
