Chris,

First you need to jack up and securely cribb the rear of the tractor, not under the drop housings. Remove the rear wheels, weights, and center disks. Then remove the drop housings by taking out the bolts that hold them to the transmission (left side)or axle extension housing (right side). The brake bands should be be exposed and the rest you should be able to see. A word of caution, the drop housings are very heavy, plan on getting some help. A trick I used is to replace a couple of the bolts with longer ones before removing the others then you have some support as you slide the housing out from the tractor. I cut the heads off them so I could use the long bolts to act as guides when I put the housing back on. You also should check the rear axel grease seals and bearings while you have it that far apart. You don't want gear oil to ruin you new breaks. Good luck, Daniel.

I need to do my brakes too because of leaky seals. Might as well do as much preventive maintenance as you can while you have everything apart.

I also recommend looking in at and (carefully) running your finger around on both of the differential bearings, either side of the tranny/diff assembly. My left side ball bearing was shot and the inner race had cracked (SHARP edges!). The ball cage was also damaged. If you look in there and don't see all the balls in a nice neat circle or feel sharp edges, the bearings are bad. They are pretty easy to replace, though. A new one cost me $10.

Thanks for the pointer Dave. I'll be replacing everything I can when the time comes.

If you do take it apart, watch the shims behind the diff bearing housing (they sandwhich between the bearing housing and diff assembly). Also, the triangular bearing housing only goes in one way (as do the shims) The bolt holes are not equally spaced.
Have fun (hope you don't have to do it)! Dave
