Messing with a 1940 B. Electric and hand start. Trying to get it running after many years, I was turning it over with the hand crank and the engine makes a loud rachet clank on every half revolution. It does it without the hand crank engaged also. Just using the fan. Any clue what this is? Is it normal? I havent tried the electric start yet.

Starter maybe trying to engage the flywheel. Remove the starter , see if it goes away. If you don't have a magneto!

Probably should remove the gen. belt & the
fan belt & turn the gen. & fan by hand to
make sure they aren't causing the noise.
Then turn the engine over to listen for
other clues to isolate the cause of the
noise.

As noted likely the mag impulse coupling. It only happens during starting. so the noise should go away when running. (assumes it has a mag ignition. If nota mag, figure out what is wrong before starting it!! Jim

Here is a video animation explaining how an impulse coupling works. If the noise is not the loudest at the magneto that the spark plug wires run to on the front right of the engine than as suggested you better find out what it is before you run it more.

Mag impulse maybe. If so, it would be normal.
