Could anyone tell me what carburetor this is on this 656 IH?
This is no ID marks or tag on the unit from what I can tell, only casting marks. Thank you for all your help!

That is the I H carb . Now with out opening it up and seeing what venture is in it and jet size i can not say that is the correct carb . I can tell ya this it is NOT correct due to the main load screw . 656 did NOT have a Screw it had a Solenoid . when the key was turned on to run the pintle went to full fuel and when thee key was turned off it shut the fuel off by dropping into the main jet . For a rebuild all ya neeed is the base gskt the carb to manifold gskt and a nedel and seat . ya even can use the gskts for a M carb

i can see your problem,... that main needle valve is turned in almost all the way. tun it in lightly till the needle seats then back it our 2 1/2 turns minimum. they run good thee for lihgt work. for heavy field work it can be 3 to 4 turns out and at 5 turns out the needle is right out of the jet so no use having it any farther out.

I will try all those things tonight and report back. Hopefully I won t have to rebuild it or open it up. It s surging under load and runs only with the choke open. I figured I d need the carburetor kit to remedy these fuel issues to check the jet inside.

I ll try the external troubleshooting mentioned and report back, but I appreciate the help!

The mounting flange is on the side towards the block on the back side of the carb area?
That s where another man said to look, but I see nothing when taking pictures of the carb on the back side. I tried last evening to find the part number on the back side. There is some bar type object that connects the choke line into the bowl area, I don t think that is what you mean exactly.
I ll be attempting to unhook this carburetor tonight. Any additional help or advice to unhook the linkage or issues you think I should know is appreciated.

I would describe the location of the round brass tag as by the back nut bolting the carb to the manifold. The proper term for the area is the ..mounting flange..

What have you done to diagnose the carburetor? Do you know if gas is getting into it? There is a small square headed plug on the bottom, see picture. You need to pull that out and see if gas flows out of there!! Should maintain a steady stream and not slow to the point that the stream has gaps in it. FYI, the fitting that screws into the carb that the gas line attaches to has a fine screen on it inside the carb. If there is not an acceptable flow then check there. When you have the line off open the sediment bowl valve under the fuel tank. Should have good flow out of the disconnected line.
