1946 farmall m has c 248 casting number behind oil filte r has date casting on block 1 17 G. That's 1937 what's the deal with that?

Like another poster wrote it's probably a later replacement block. Should be a casting number near the C-248 unless ground off. If 365586R1 block should have a fuel pump block off plate with two bolts holding it on near carburetor. Also a dipstick or hole drilled for one plugged on right side of block. If the casting number is above the block is likely to be the bore for a C-264 and C-281 even though it has C-248 on it.

The CID of block has no bearing on which head is on it. The M - 450 (C-281) heads are physically all interchangeable. The only minor difference is a change in the breather tube connection to the air intake.

Has dj above C 248 also has the
cover plate below carburetor

Don'tknow the reason some replacement blocks have numbers ground off. That DJ had 4 numbers before it once, but the DJ is enough to tell it probably has a bore that fits a M sleeve OD. Blocks seen by me seen by me with casting number I posted above can be found with C-248 .C-264 or C-281 on block but all have the bore diameter to use 264 and 281 sleeves. Power unit block casting number was used for some replacement blocks in M size.

(quoted from post at 19:18:26 08/20/23) If it is replacement block would
it have the 264 or 281 head on
it ?

It probably has the head that came off the original engine.

I would not be surprised if the engine had the sleeves pistons rods crank cam, etc. from the original engine. Keep in mind in those days farmers would pinch pennies so tightly, copper wire would squirt out between their fingers.
