Replacement Hood Not Fitting on B

I am working on a 45 Farmall B and I bought a re-pop hood from a company who's name begins with an S. I put the hood on the tractor and the exhaust pipe and rocker arm cover breather holes are off set to the right a 1/4 to 3/8 from where they should be. There is a serial number split on the A's and B's that I believe is for the method of attachment for the hood. Early had the Deutz type fasteners and the later went with the springs and pull hooks. Was there some change too the side to side position of the breather and the exhaust pipe at some point? I have and early A with a 71k serial number and this hood would not fit on it. There is no amount of adjusting that would make this hood fit short of welding the holes shut and re-cutting them.

I want to dip my bucket into the well of knowledge of the members of this forum to help me clarify whether I am right that this hood was fabricated wrong.

Thanks

I don't recall any reason the intake or exhaust should have changed positions. I think you have a bad part.

Jim,

I would concur. I sent measurements of the locations to one of S's techs. He left me a voice mail saying that all of the hoods they have in stock have the same measurements. That tells me all of them are bad. Looks like I will be welding up the holes an cutting new ones. It's to bad, the rest of the hood is really nice. I have a big show coming up in a few months so I have to get this one rolling. One more example of getting stuff from the land of almost right.

I believe those hoods were hand made right here in the good ol' USA, by OEM Tractor Parts (now defunct due to the death of the owner), so no blaming China on this one. Them were screwed up by good ol' red-blooded 'Muricans.

I'd send it back and get a good used original. There were a ton of A's and B's made so hoods are plentiful. I'll bet JP Tractor Salvage has several to choose from and they'll pick you out a nice one.

I would not butcher a new hood for this. I would send it back and expect them to take it also. I have never dealt with them and only live about 15 miles from them. I think they are high on parts just because they think you need it. J.P.Salvage will most likely have a nice hood for you and be very reasonable for it too. I have dealt with them in the past with favorable experience.

Do you have an original hood to compare dimensions? If not, I could check your measurements against one. I assume a simple distance from centerline of the hood to the center of each hole is all that is required to tell the story.

Another vote to send back, and collect a re-fund.

If those two holes are off, then what does that tell you about the rest of it being spot on? Something else you maybe haven't noticed yet?

I wouldn't re-fabricate it to 'MAKE' it work. I'd find a good used one. Figure on repainting it. As long as the used one you find don't have cracks and dents in it, it'll look like a brand spanking new one once you get it re-painted. And you won't have any flaws in it from your re-fab efforts.

Dzus type fasteners were used on the 1930 & 40 A's and B's. 1941 began the J Hook style hood attachment.

There should be no changes in placement of holes for exhaust, breather, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I can't send it back, I had it sand blasted. I did fit it to the tractor before I had it sandblasted but I didn't have the manifold on and I missed seeing the breather hole. I bought this because all of the hoods I saw on Fleabay were just as expensive and looked pretty beat up. I have the equipment and ability to weld up and re-cut the holes, I just don't feel I should have too. IF all of the other hoods at this supplier are bad, then I am stuck with it. If I could leave a review of this hood I would warn others not to buy them.

Thanks again,

OTJ

OEM sold them but did not make themn. The tooling it would take to make them would have been too expensive then just to buy a
roll of the steel needed too much money. They were made over seas too many were selling them for less than IEM was getting. Same as
the grilles they were made in CHINA i seen boxes of them for sale with China wrote on the box there again the tooling it took to
make them would have cost a bundle.

Wait..... 1/4 of an inch??? So the exhaust pipe isn't perfectly centered?? All 3 of my Bs have original hoods, and they sure don't center perfect. The tractor was made to work, not built to be a perfect show piece.

Of course I'm a 100 percent purist

ARE you sure the hood isnt for a C as they are longer put it side by side with the old one something is wrong as they didnt make all of them like yours measure the original one and compare or take it to someomne who has a B and compare DONT CUT IT UP SOMETHING IS WRONG ANDS FIND OUT WHERE BY COMPARING WITH A GOOD ONE

Sounds like the hoods came from the country of almost right. Seem every time I buy something that don't fit right, look at the box, yup, MADE IN CHINA.
Might want to call them and see if you can return it.

Its not just the exhaust hole, its the breather hole also. The breather hole is off enough that the hood almost touches the breather stack. The breathe filter would not fit down on to the stack the way it is supposed too. I am very picky. My wife says my middle name should have been Ana* so I am going to fill the holes and make it right.

Not just "this" supplier. ALL suppliers.

If you think there is/was more than one place in the world making these, competing over that sweet sweet Farmall B hood money, think again. Just not enough demand.

Also, Ebay is the LAST place you should be looking for hoods. Overpriced, junk, shipping will kill ya. As I recommended earlier, JP Tractor Salvage if you can't find a salvage yard within a couple of hours. Reasonably priced, will ship.
