so i was going to spread manure the other day and when i started the h there was a load racket in the flywheel/starter area..... then something sounded like it broke... parked tractor, took out starter and all the gear on the end of the starter were wore down all mangled... put a different starter in from my other h and it wont spin the flywheel? and it will not pop start acts likes something is grabbing.... any help would be great

Did you look at the teeth on the flywheel. There probably worn down real bad and that is probably what tore up the bendix gear on the starter. Engines usually stop in the same spot after shut down, so those teeth are always the same ones that the starter engages for start up. Most ring gears can be turned around on the flywheel, not real sure on an H. Set the flywheel on a block and heat up the ring gear a little with a torch and drive it off the flywheel. Flip flywheel over and lay ring gear on flywheel opposite way and heat up the ring gear and tap it on the flywheel and it will shrink back down to a tight fit.

Since they stop in the same few places each time the ring gear can just be turned about a 1/4 turn and all will be fine on the ring gear if teeth are worn in that spot. Then with a new drive on the shaft in starter all should work well.

You have part of the drive wedged in between the flywheel and housing. Might have to drop the pump and look in there.

Not sure what you mean by (pop start).

Did you try to rotate the engine using the hand crank when you had the starter removed? Just to see if everything (besides the starter) is free.

If you take the starter back off to check that out, have a look at the teeth on the flywheel ring gear while you are at it. And not just what you can see through the whole. Rotate the engine so you can see the rest of it. See what all of it looks like.

This might not have anything to do with your problem, but sometimes a jammed starter is something that an H will do (when trying to start). If this happens, you can usually un-jam the starter by rocking the tractor back and forth while in gear. It sounds like your first starter didn't dis-engage (which is a separate issue), but it might be the problem with your second starter, if you find the ring gear teeth to be good.

If you are thinking the first starter didn't dis-engage, which that's what it sounds like, make sure you don't have an issue with your starter push button. If it happened to of been sticking on, it might of been the cause of the non-disengagement of first starter. Just something to rule out, considering what happened.

If you find the flywheel ring gear is all chewed up beyond use, there is only one way of fixing that. Replace it. Yes, some people have been known to just turn them around. But it's a big enough job on an H, you might as well put on a new one while your there. It's also a big enough job, that you'll want to rule out all else before doing so. That's why I mentioned the things above. Might not be any of your problem, but things you might want to consider before splitting your tractor in half. I'm thinking the flywheel won't come out the hydraulic pump whole. Even if it does, it's a sizeable job even doing it that way. But I'm thinking that it won't. Could be wrong on that part. I've never tried to take one out of an H.

Can you turn the engine (ignition off, spark plugs out) with the crank or pry bar on the belt pulley flange, etc ? Do you hear or feel anything unusual, is something catching ?

it spins with pry bar everything turns..(spark plugs were still in) but the starter wont spin it moves it a little then wont move anymore looked at ring gear dosent look bad also pulled cover on bottom nothing... this starter came out of my other h and works fine on that one

Sounds odd. You're sure the battery, cables and connections are good ? The simplest explanation is often the best.

What happens if you turn the engine backwards with the bar and then try the starter ?

Yes cables are good it will engage and move it real slow n hard for a second. Took starter back out put in other h and that fire right up
