I can think of no reason why you couldn’t. You would have to have a pointer and mark on the end of the crank that were set at TDC on the number 1 cylinder. A timing light with a dial advance would make this a lot simpler other wise you would need timing marks on the end of the crank as well. I can’t help you with a timing setting. I would do it similar to a Hi-performance auto engine. Set the engine at around 1000 RPMs under a slight load and turn the distributor to get the highest power and vacuum readings. Use your timing light to check where the timing is set for future reference and lock it down. Be careful not to advance the motor to far. Use as little advance as will get you the maximum power/vacuum.

Leave radiator and fuel caps slightly loose to protect gaskets. Block tractor up to remove weight from tires and to keep tires from contact with moist floor.
