Hi Folks I have a H4 mag on my 1940 BN witch puts out a yellow spark and it can take up to 20 swings of the handle to start it. I have just recoditioned a nuther H4 mag and it has the correct blue spark and the tractor starts on the second crank. What is wrong with the mag with the
yellow spark. MJ.

Could be caused by a number of things. Weak magnets. coil going bad, dirty points or bad condenser

I will add: And a weak or gummed up impulse coupling. If it runs reliably and strong, look to the impulse first. Jim

just as jim says , you should hear the impulse trip at each plug fire. and it its clicking the condenser is next, providing you have clean and set points.

I rarely find that magnets fail . I have four h4 magneto ,two operating. Test the magnets with screw driver should snap down when you get close to it. I d clean the rust off the laminated iron and core.
I always change out the coil ,I get new coil from napa about 36 buck last time. Clean round iron core
Check bearings .
I use a spark tester , on number one after I got the magneto installed. Spark jumps over a half inch. I was told by tech at messicks that a hot magneto .so my efforts paid off .
I found Kevins magneto in manito Illinois to ge extremely helpful . He can recharge magnets for you .parts and kits

Theres another fellow in Minnesota thats good and fellow Amish here in Ohio thats good also ,sorry forgot his name ,I got his card some where .
Also if you want to do it yourself get the blue ribbon manual for magneto service that way you dont assume and assemble. I got mine off eBay. Worth every penny
