I am trying to get the bolster pivot out of my H and got the sector gear off ( it has several broken teeth ) and the lower bolster off but the shaft dropped down only about 1 1/2 " with some persuasion from a lead hammer but it won't drop any further I'm affraid that I'll mushroom the end of the shaft if I use something harder on the end of the shaft. any ideas?

Just did this a couple of weeks ago, and had the same problem. This is what I did. Screw that gear up on the threads so that the top of the shaft and the gear are flush. Then, I took a piece of HARD wood, not soft pine or the likes, lay it on top of the gear and shaft. Then I stood on a bucket and whacked on it with a 5 lb. hammer. Don't beat the life out of it, cause you may miss and that would be bad on something. That piece of hard wood is forgiving enough not to do any damage to any casting or shaft.

It took several whacks, but it came and no damage was done.

Good luck, if you need more info, ask.

Zonie - The pivot shaft on mine fell right out soon as I removed the nut. But the bushings were quite worn so there was nothing to hold the shaft. You probably have good bushings and it's a tight fit for the very top (unworn) end of the pivot shaft to slip thru the upper bushing. Red's suggestion to use an extension to pound on the shaft is a good one - just be sure to protect the relatively soft pivot shaft threads so you mushroom them over. Use a piece of brass bar stock, or steel bar stock and stick a piece of softer metal (like a penny) on the end of it to protect the pivot shaft threads.

Suggest putting a jack, a pile of wood block under something under the pivot shaft flange. It weighs 20+ lb - when it comes free you won't want it landing on your toes!

Good luck! ...Bob M

PS - Did you buy a new sector gear?

Zonie can you get a hammer or an extension so you can pound on the flat plate at the bottom of the bolster shaft?

I still don't have enough room to get into the bottom plate yet.
