Gas cap that doesnt leak?

With a full tank all the old stock caps will leak through the breathing hole. There are tall caps that do not tend to leak. I have one but I do not know what they are called.

There was a recall on letter series gasoline tractors. You can apply by going to navistar with the tractor serial number . I did three or four years ago . What happened, today not sure

IH has had a recall on gas cas for near 20 years. Google IH free gas caps. All it takes is a serial Number to get a free one. If the neck on the tank is straight, these seal well. Jim

The new caps have two vent holes in the top (crown). They are 2.5 inches or so tall. They have better and more internal baffles. The original short caps are really dangerous and messy. The recall is the result of fires and was assumed by the Navistar company that bought IH truck engine production. Jim

The new caps have rubber sealing rings. They dont leak like the old cork ones do. However, the rim/neck may be bent or warped. If that is the case,no cap will seal. You will need to straighten the rim. A special tool is availabe for purchace.

(quoted from post at 14:02:52 09/25/22) Are there gas caps for the letter series you can get that

Actually the original IH gas cap recall program was about 40 years ago. I was still working at FARMALL when Dad got his first 2 caps. The new cap was EXACTLY like the tall cap IH used since about 1950, claimed to be a triple baffle cap. The new cap had a second bar or pair of lugs to engage the slots in the neck of the tank that required turning the cap till it stopped, lifting the cap slightly like you have to do on a radiator cap, then you can turn the gas cap an additional quarter turn till it stops, then it lifts off the tank. Exactly like a radiator cap. The new caps originally were difficult to put on and take off. I drilled out the Pop - Rivets and removed the extra catch on both caps. The work MUCH better.
Back when Dad was farming, if I got close enough to a gas barrel to put SOME gas in I filled the tank. Things like plowing with the 450 gas I'd burn a 22 gallon tank before lunch, a second full tank by 4-5 PM and using a third tank that evening was easy enough. Now days Even the Super H I push snow with I don't quite use 10 gallons an entire winter.

The tool is for straightening a damaged filler neck. If the filler neck is in something close to original condition, the new cap goes right on.
