1086 engine in a 966

Possibly have a chance to buy a 966 that has a 1086 engine installed. The engine is installed and running. It has about 75 hours of run time with the 1086 engine. The problem is the exhaust on the 1086 needs some room where the 966 fuel tank sits. Instead it has a piece of square tubing acting as the exhaust pipe sending exhaust out the side of the engine. With the turbo in place there just isn't enough room to run a pipe like it should from the turbo. The sheet metal to cover the engine has not been installed because of the way the exhaust is currently run.

Cure?

Smaller fuel tank? remove the turbo and install the stock exhaust and NA air intake? The original engine is laying on the floor in the shop beside the tractor.

Altering the shape of the tank might be easiest. Cutting out the offending area and welding in a pocket to allow clearance and maybe a heat shield would work and be less intrusive. Finding someone to do it might be hardest. Jim

Maybe check what type of tank or fix did the factory use to put the turbo on the 1066s?

Maybe cheapest way is if you don't need the extra hp is to remove the 1086 exhaust and turbo, intake pipe and install the manifold from the 966 engine

So my initial thought was that the 966 had a 414 cu inch engine and the 1086 was a 436 cu inch engine. According to tractor data I was wrong. The other thought I had was sometimes there are internal differences between an engine with a turbo and na engine even though they are the same engine. Im not familiar enough with these to know if there are any differences, but Im sure someone more knowledgeable here would know. If fuel capacity isnt a major concern I would modify the tank to make everything else work. Might not take as much as you think, and may be the best solution. Have any pics ?

Go to the wrecking yard and get a fuel tank and all the brackets, right hood panel and the short top center panel the fuel neck sticks through for a 10,14 or 1566 will work. Its all direct bolt on stuff. It won't cost much and look correct.

Pretty sure the turbo is in the exact same location on 66 and 86 series. Only difference is the 86 series has the muffler stuffed under the hood while the 66 series has a muffler above the hood.

You need part #1 below which will turn the exhaust up through the stock hole in the hood:

Right now there isn't room for part #1. The installer replaced it with a piece of square tubing (2 X 4) and directed the exhaust out the side. The square tubing is jammed up against the heat shield that
protects the fuel tank. If the 1066 and the 1086 both have the save turbo set up - does the 1066 and 966 have the different fuel tanks?

According to the parts books, they have different tanks. Unfortunately I can only go by pictures because the part numbers for the tanks themselves are not listed, as they are NLA from CaseIH.

Yes they have different tanks. You need everything I posted earlier. I have done this many times. One thing I forgot was the cast elbow that goes up through the hood. You need all the parts I mentioned or it will not work.
