Farmall 1944 BN parts

I am planning my winter project of fixing the brakes and addressing a lub leak somewhere around the rear end. Right side brakes grab badly and left side brake no work at all. I am ready to order parts and I think the brake band and final drive gasket set is what I need for that.
However, to address the lub leak there are several seals, washers and gaskets to choose from. From your experience, what am I likely to need? I don't know exactly where the leak originates but is in the middle between the two rear wheels, around the differential I guess.

Thanks for help. Michael

Get it apart first. then order parts sometimes some of the parts either have some gaskets with them in a kit deal or seals and gaskets come in a kit. There may be other hard parts you will need when you get it apart like a shaft or bearing that will hold things up some anyway.

Most common and biggest leak will be at the seal at the transmission but given the age of the tractor all the seals probably need replacement. I just replaced the seals at the transmission and brake bands on mine and probably should have done the outer seal but didn't. On mine I removed the wheel weights before taking off the wheels to make them easier to work with. On the driver side you will also have to take off the fender which means removing the seat and you will have to take off the platform. As long as all the bolts cooperate its pretty straight forward. Unless you are in really good physical shape having a second person for removing the axles and putting them back is a big help. Like any oil seal job it will be messy until you get things cleaned up.

Agree with caterpillar guy, unless you are on a very tight schedule to get the job done and have a very open ended budget ordering parts before taking it apart is not a good idea. This is especially true if it is your first time doing this kind of project.

If you insist on ordering parts ahead of time, get them all and replace them all.

Most tractor wrenching is "take it apart, see what's wrong, fix it."

I understand time and space may be a factor, but when you try to guess at what you need you 100% of the time guess wrong and are stuck waiting for the right parts anyway.
