Farmall Model A

Never owned a Farmall but my cousin is offering up what I take is a 1947 Model A. Hasnt ran in a couple years, been converted to 12V from what I gather. I think it will look great next to my 8N. Thoughts?

I own one and learned much of my tractor driving skills on one growing up. They are a great tractor if you don't need a lift for anything as they never had hydraulics. I'd get it if it were me. One problem - as you get older they get a lot harder to get onto.

Does he have the battery box for it? Probably took it off to remove the battery when it was parked.

First thing I would do is see if engine is free, does it still have the hand crank for it? If it does turn over next thing I would do is drain oil out of the engine to see if there is any water in the base.

Depends on what you mean by "offering up." Free? For a price?

Never turn down a free tractor.

Farmall A's aren't good for much. No hydraulics. Attachments are far and few between (Super A attachments don't fit). Basically it's good for pulling a cart or wagon around.

The mechanical principles are the same as a Ford 8N, but if you're stymied by the distributor being in a different location and/or orientation, or the overhead valve configuration, that might be something to consider. On the other hand if your attitude is a distributor is a distributor, you'll be able to work on it. A lot of guys seem to get put "off feed" by different paint color.

He said I could have it and it would be doing him a favor before they move back north. With that said, he told me he will need to get it running and take down a section of
fence to get it out to the driveway. I feel that offering him something for it is only fair, I just dont know what fair might be. Im not concerned about the lack of utility,
pulling grandkids around in a wagon is probably the toughest job it will have to handle. Im more interested in the nostalgia, my dad sent me a picture of me on my
grandpas old Farmall when I was just a little guy.

I see from the photo it has a magneto so it does not need a battery to run. That is providing the magneto is functional. I see it has no lights so the battery is only needed for starting. If the engine is not stuck and it has good gas and oil it might start by just pulling it. Be aware that no voltage should be applied to the screw on the side of the magneto or it will be ruined. When you ground that screw it grounds the spark and kills the engine. Also be aware the points and condenser are different than the ones for battery ignition.

I am going to pick up my Farmall A on Monday, driving 617 miles one way. The only thing that it will ever do is pull a parade wagon full of the most beautiful granddaughters I could have ask for. One day, (hopefully a long, long time from now) it will be my grandsons tractor. I am taking him with me, he is only 6 and has no idea where or why we are going, hes just excited to get to go to a hotel for 2 days. Memories, just like that picture you have is what its all about. Go get that tractor, fix it up, give it to loved one many years from now.

Not that it matters but are we now talking about two different "A"s?

I'm guessing you are not going to be driving that "A" 617 miles home!

As to the lack of utility for one I sure would not turn one down if I was offered one! Find a good used Woods L306 mower and you have a good mower like my BN!
