Removing a ring gear from Flywheel

Heat it with a o
Oxy Acetylene torch (round and round to spread the temp. it will fall off. Grinding a notch in it and using a cold chisel to split it is also tidy. Heat the new in the oven (or Oxy-acetylene to put it on. Jim

Heat evenly with a soft acetylene flame and the ring gear will slide right over. A good propane torch flame should do it too - perhaps with a bit of tapping to encourage the gear off.

To install a new gear, heat it to 400 - 450 in the oven then QUICKLY set it into position. Tip: This is best done while the Mrs. is in town for an hour or two....

ASSUMING you are not planning to turn it or flip it & reuse it simply knock it off of the flywheel with a punch & hammer, NO need to waste torch gas on the old one.

If you are skilled with a torch, and not planning on re-using it, just cut it in two at any one location without cutting into the flywheel. It will spred open where cut and come right off. You should really have enough torching skills to be able to cut just the ring gear and not the flywheel, to be attempting this. If your torching skills are not up to that level, you might want to do it some other way.

It takes alot less gas to just cut it, than it does to heat it up and remove it as you would when putting it on.

No heat is needed to remove. Just tap with hammer and punch, working your waybaround it.You aan remove one faster than fireing up the torch and heating. I have even done it without removeing the ring from the flywheel.Just tap it off. Reinstall the same. Hang the ring from a frame bolt,or some place close. Warm it,and when it is hot, just slip it on and use that same hammer and punch to seat it.

I heat them up with cutting torch , they just fall off . Rachel has a video how she does it . I dont recommend driving them off cold it cracks the thin ring on flywheel if you have this design

Make sure you have enough gas to finish the heating , I didnt .

(quoted from post at 00:25:23 09/17/22) What is the best way to remove a old ring gear from a flywheel.
Thanks
Gary

I probably installed hundreds of ring gears on UPS trucks in my 25 years as a UPS mechanic. A hammer and a robust flat drift punch is all you need to remove them. Place on a flat solid surface and strike a good whack every 1/4 way around till it falls off. Turn it over and lay new ring in place on top of flywheel and heat with ace. torch going around the gear continuously until it falls on, Then make sure it is seated with taht punch and hammer,,,easy!!!
