If the 240 axle seals remained the same from the Farmall C then you have to remove the entire axle shaft housing from the transmission to change that seal. The seal is at the transmission housing end of the shaft not out at the wheel end like on some others.

Hockeyguy,
I did recently do this job on my Farmall C. If you would like some more details let me know by posting back on this string. I can give you some info about specific steps to pull the entire axle and axle housing, which is necessary to change the seals.

That would be great. Thanks

Hockeyguy,

The only way to remove the axle shaft and housing is to remove the driven axle shaft gear inside the transmission first. The two options are to remove the entire transmission cover or to work through the opening behind the pto. I chose to work through the pto opening. Once you remove the entire pto unit you will need to reach inside "the hole is not as big as you would like" and remove the keeper that holds the gear onto the shaft. The older models used fine thread bolts and a keeper plate. I believe the later model like your 240 used a snap clip type. Once you have the keeper and the gear removed and you have all the housing bolts out, you can slide the entire housing and shaft out of the transmission. I used a hydraulic lifting table to hold it in place since it is heavy. I recommend something that can lift and hold it while rolling like a transmission jack or similar tool. Now you can change the seals and the shaft felt wipers, check bearings etc. I suggest some help reinstalling since you will need to move the shaft and housing into the transmission while placing the gear on.

Good Luck
