460 head gasket question

We are having no luck removing the brass insert for the temp sensor. We are going to give it one more try which will either remove it or break the easyout. If we break the easyout my plan is to remove the exhaust manifold (has a sizable crack) then remove the head and have a machine shop remove the insert and any bolts we break on the exhaust manifold and have the head milled.

This website lists a head gasket kit for C291 or C301 gas engine - then also lists the 460 tractor. Will this kit work on the C221 gas engine?

I hate going through all this work for what should have been a 15 minute job but that how it goes...

Is this a 460 utility? I realize the access may be limited and my hack saw method as mentioned in your other post may not work. You should get a set of the easy-outs shown in the link. I have had pretty good luck with those. As a last resort. are you familiar with a Dremel tool? I would almost think you could easily buy the Dremel and Carbide burrs and cut some grooves in two sides and knock it out. Way less work and cost than opening up the engine. I think the gasket is correct to work on all the sizes of that IH 6 cylinder. I really do not think you need to replace the head bolts. What view do you use? I can direct you how to post a ..clickable.. link.

After drilling a file would get the rest out pretty good. And if all there is left is the threads then it should come out with a tap pretty easy with some care.

I dont recommend easy out in your case pitcular case because that reduced bushing is one of the thightest I ever had to remove . You want to release the pressure away from the pipe thread in the block . However you do that you will succeed in removal .

It took quite awhile to remove mine from the 560 . I did not strip the hex from the bushing , I used a tight socket, four in. Extension and long breaker bar. It took two of us ,one to hold socket and extension true to axis of bushing thread so socket would not strip hex from out of line pressure.

Pitty ,sorry to hear that. I consider myself lucky to have got it to turn out on the 560 . I totally understand your plight. Since it didnt happen to me . With out seeing the issue you have . Im just guessing as to the successful removal . I feel anything that result in pressure outward against the pie thread of the block will hurt you in extracting the broken off bushing. The corrosion is acting like weld.

Try soaking the threads with Tap Majic is a suggestion

i just went through the same deal on my w9 head. no way would i be taking the head of. mine came out with an easy out . make sure its the square tapered ones not them round ones. i ground mine flush with the head with a polishing wheel first. even if you heat that red hot and let it cool then try it. only heat the brass though from the inside. it will come out. yes its a pipe thread.

now i see its the insert,... so just unscrew the actual bushing in the head. as thats what i was referring to.
