My new to me M has a hose running from the bottom radiator pipe to the head where the temperature sending unit is. I have had a couple of Ms before but never seen this. Was this an add on? Same with the tool box is this IH or after market? Thanks, Mark

Yes, probably added for a tank type plug in engine heater. Unless there is a possibility it came from a real cold climate and they had a cab of some type on it that ran a heater. Is that barb for the hose in the lower radiator pipe threaded in?
 
That tool box hanging from the steering shaft IS a factory made toolbox, but NOT an IH made factory tool box.
It was possibly sold by an IH dealer, or a Tractor Supply or equivalent. I personally never liked a toolbox hanging over the gas tank, I'd have to climb up on the platform to look into the box and get the tool I needed, then climb down. Dad welded up BIG frame mounted tool boxes that held a quart or two of oil, couple tubes of grease, an old T-shirt for a shop rags, a ball pein hammer, big creasant wrench, a couple screw drivers. They also were a nice platform to stand on when fueling or checking the radiator. My Super H and Dad's 4010 had a grease gun clamp type holder, little over-center affair that held the gun on the frame rail.

That hose from the lower radiator hose to the cyl head is something somebody added. If your not going to put an electric block heater on the tractor I would remove the hose and both fittings and install brass plugs with a couple wraps of Teflon tape, maybe chase the threads first if you have NPT taps. I'm not sure why anyone would route water from the front lower block inlet to the back end of the head.
 
someone has installed that hose there , as they could have had the circulating block heater there. then removed it and just used a hose . i would remove it and plug those ends. the circulating heaters were usually put on the block drain then up to the temp sending unit in the head. never know what someone comes up with .nice tool box but not that handy like on the 60 series on the frame.
 
I have lost or misplaced a lot of things too, my shop was even robbed once robbed once, but never plowed under a grease gun,i bought a new 806 in 1967, put a grease gun holder on it, the same grease gun is still in that holder yet!And yes he was caught!!
 
I still have the pistol grip grease gun We/I carried on the SH, used it 250 hours a year doing chores, light fieldwork, mowing/raking hay, planting corn/beans, spraying, hauling manure, and moving ALL our hog houses and hog feeders & water tanks from old to new hog pastures. Our 24 ft hog house skid could hold 7 or 8 modified A hog houses, lots of weight to drag! Also hauled in all the harvested crops, oats and earcorn, made the 10 mile round trip to town for ground hog feed 3 times a week.
I'm actually surprised the grease gun didn't get stolen! I'd use a pair of Channeloc pliers to tighten the over-center latch occasionally, make it so it SNAPPED open or closed. Don't have the grease gun holder on the tractor anymore, tractor has a Ford Loader which is similar in design to an IH #2000. I have an IH 2000 I'm going to put on My M this winter to replace the StanHoist loader that's seen better days. Have a new Cross 3-spool valve for the M too, one for bucket, one for loader lift/lower, last for trailing implement lift.
 
Those were not installed as (IHC) factory items at the factory. Someone has added this stuff on.
I agree, the hose was probably the end result of someone having a block heater at one time. The only other reason I can think of, would be to channel cold water to the back of the head, which (in my opinion) was a little lean with the inlet coolant ports at the front of the engine. But have never heard of anybody adding a hose to address this issue.

I'd remove both, if it were mine. And I'd find a replacement pipe (that the blue hose connects to) at a salvage yard, instead of trying to plug that. While you are at, find a shroud, and perhaps the piece you need to put in the head so you are not trying to plug that hole (homemade style) either. The head hole, not that big of deal. Unless you want your heat guage hooked back up and that piece has been discarded. But that lower pipe, will be an eyesore for all to see, if you plug that. Unlike the one in the head, which will be covered up by the hood. No one will ever see that.
