My brother (many miles away)needs to remove the starter. After removing the two capscrews he is not able to finagle the starter out of the clutch housing. Is there a trick to this, or is he not holding his mouth right - as our Dad used to say ?

all W4s and SW4 have two 1/2" bolts like rust says the only thing I would add to the belt pulley removal is to take the bolts out of the bracket the throttle rod and choke rod goes through on the top of the clutch cover. it makes it a little easier to wiggle the starter out of there with those rods up a little
. I cannot find the bracket in the parts manual buy I circled where it goes

I pulled my starter on my old I-4 twice and never removed the belt pulley. remove as many of the cover bolts as you can get to, pry up on the cover near the starter and rotate, wigggle and snort just right and it comes right out.

theres only 4 bolts with one under the belt pulley gearbox. it won't lift much at all esp with the brass breather tube fitting in the back of the head. will lift 3/16 " max at that fitting

It doesnt need to come up very much at all. In fact it wont come up very much, but will just enought to wiggle out the starter. If
I still had it I would shoot a video and show it can be done.

I have taken dozens of W4 starters off but give you the benefit of the doubt since you seem to be knowledgeable
You cannot get the starter off by lifting the clutch cover. just not possible. I took one off today. see pic- the clutch cover is as high as it can go up against the belt pulley gear box. I saw some else make the same claim as you on FB but I am sorry it won't work. The starter will not clear the belt pulley gar box
If someone can prove me wrong have at it
