They are weak points on the tractor. There are shims to push the rack closer to the gear, but not much to push the gears closer. There are no New parts. A shaft
bushing could be bad enough to cause issues, so tearing it down can make sense. Best of luck. Jackson Power Steering has power steering replacement kits. Jim

Mine was really bad as well. I built up the worn teeth on the sector gears with weld and ground them back down. Ugly? Yes. But it made it usable again for the cost of some labor.

The two halves of the gearbox are split vertically and there are a couple eccentric bolts to adjust the mesh of the two sector gears. Before pulling the gearbox out for repair, try this first. Find and remove those two eccentric bolts, then loosen all the remaining bolts holding the halves together, just enough where you can tap the right hand side of the case towards the rear with a big hammer or pry bar. Jack up the front end to take the weight off the wheels and steer all the way left and right to make sure you aren't in a bind. Gradually tighten up the gearbox bolts while doing this to achieve your tighest mesh without binding.

You can try using the eccentrics for this adjustment also. I just found it quicker and easier without, and there is a little more adjustment available in the gearbox than the eccentrics provide.

And also verify that you don't have slop in the splined steering arms, tie rod ends, or the crank arm on top of the front wheel spindle. A small amount of play in these will really amplify the steering box play.

Here's one of my sector gears before welding up the teeth. I'm pretty sure it had received the weld treatment at least once before. Remember if you are starting with garbage, you can't make it worse.

The steering boxes were originally oil filled. You may find it has been grease filled as is common.

I've partially rebuilt the power steering on
my 300 and completely rebuilt the 350 with
the assistance of many in this site. I've
been fortunate. The 300 just needed some
seals. The 350 was fairly rusty bearings
seals and orings shot. Internal shaft and
gears and had some wear issues which 8
changed up by have as best as I could. PS is
at least functional now. I was surprised that
I was actually able to source many of the
parts but especially in the case of power
steering units, some parts are very difficult
to come by.
