Hi, I have an I-14 Tractor. Back in 1984 My Dad and I did a Bunch of work to make the machine functional. We used it quite a bit but it always had one major problem, the steering would Bind to the point of you couldn't steer, AT ALL!
Im getting ready to do work on her and put her back in service and was hoping/wondering if anyone ever experienced this problem and figured out the solution.
I do Know the steering arm from the steering box to the pitman arm rubs against the frame at times. Maybe mine is Bent wrong?

Thanks!
Frank

If you remove the steering arm from the box arm and you turn the steering wheel from full right to full left will it lock or does it seem ok. Pics will help to so we can see if that arm is bent wrong. Maybe something bumped it hard at one time??

This is how we got the machine and back then My Dad (Chief Engineer on the restoration project) Wasnt Keen to alter that Rod. Today Im ok with reducing that bend but Im not sure How Much.
I did remove the arm off the gear box and it rotates very smoothly, no Binding.

In the Pics you can see the rub marks, as soon as the front wheel on that side comes up 1/2 the rod is forced against the frame.
The Machine was in The Old Philadelphia Navy Yard on flat concrete/ asphault its whole life used at the docks to pull carts like the airport Mules do these days. I Imagine they didnt have much steering problems on relatively level ground.

So Do you suggest Heating and straightening that Rod till I get about 1-1/2 clearance? Almost Funny to have to fix something like this as old as the Machine is.
