McCormick W-4 super locked up engine when cold

Hello, need some advice I have a early 50s McCormick Deering W-4 super and when the outside temperature gets lower and close to freezing temperatures the engine seizes on a certain spot and locks solid when trying to start. Ive changed all the oils and fluids, removed the starter and tried by hand, and have the clutch disengaged. It only locks up in one spot and can free it eventually by rocking it in 4th gear.

I'll bet it was stuck at one time. The one spot is a ring of rust binding things up.Live with it,or pull the head and hone that spot.Get a borescope and look inside through a sparkplug hole.
 
Use some Fogging oil, it comes in a spray can,make sure your get a straw with it,,to spray into the spark plug hole two days later give it another shot, that might save you from pulling the head!!!!!
 
sounds like the starter locks up
next time loosen the starter bolts and give the starter a wiggle and tighten the bolts back up. normally I rock one in 5th gear and you can usually hear a click when it unlocks. if the starter works you found the problem
 
Maybe because of the different expansion/contraction rates of the cast block and aluminum pistions has something to do with it?Cast iron contracts more than the aluminum,therefore the bad spot gets tighter in cold weather?Dont know. Just guessing. Throwing stones?

a cold engine should be looser than a warm/hot one
 
The next time that it is locked up, mark the crankshaft pulley with a marker or however you which to mark it. Then make sure that when you turn it off, that the engine is moved off that spot. Sometimes that can be accomplished by turning the fan. If you can not get the engine to move that way, use a hand crank if it is equipped for it. If this keeps it from locking up, it will make starting it easier. It doesn't fix the problem, but it might eliminate it from happening again.
