battery discahrge through VR

On one of my Super Cs the battery will run down if it sits over night, Disconnecting the ground cable 'fixes' the problem. I measure 5.3V between the end of the cable and the tractor chassis.

I recall a problem with one of the sets of points in the voltage regulator causing a problem like this. I suspect something like that is going on. Is there a fix for that ?

Brillman was out of 6V Postive Gnd VRs and didn't know when they would get any more. Is there any one else in the US making good quality 6V POS GND Delco style voltage regulators ?
Thanks
Greg

In the event a VR's Cutout Relay (or a stand alone cutout relay) contacts stick closed (supposed to open upon shut down)

1) The battery will drain fairly rapid, perhaps much sooner than overnight.

2) The genny may get warm.

3) If the belt were removed, the genny if all else okay would spin.

Removal of the wire to BAT or GEN/ARM on the VR would stop such a discharge

One source if still in business is Wiring Harnesses,Com

Of course, there can be OTHER causes of battery discharge besides the VR (has battery been tested??). If the wire to BAT on the VR or gennys ARM were removed yet she still discharged, must be some other problem. If removal totally stops the discharge, then it must be the VR..

The battery voltage to frame ground should be around 6.3 volts for a full charged battery at rest and stabilized, but rise to at least 6.5 to 7 or so if under a good charge

It may help to lightly clean/buff/polish burned relay contacts, worth a try but once damaged they may fail again soon...

Im sure I missed some things, see what the other fine gents may add to this

that is kind of an easy thing to see if you watch the amp meter when you shut the tractor down, the amp gauge will stay on the discharge side instead of going to zero. disconnect battery and it will release.

Thats the Jim we used to chat with and shop at the New York Two Cylinder EXPO's. I think he offers a quality line and can advise on what makes or models to use. Glad to hear hes still in business
