Farmall M Governor

Hey Gents,
My Farmall M is showing classic signs of needing some Governor parts. It has a lot of throttle take up and is missing some engine RPM on the top. I was wonder if you fellows could help with a parts list before I open it up. I have rebuilt a few Governors and of course I know it needs a spring, I am just not familiar with the other wear points. Thanks for the help.

Before disassembly, remove the link from the cylinder head down to the governor control arm (curved lever at the back of the
governor box. Start the tractor (warmed up some before effort) and hand move the lever through its range. If it speeds up to the
High Idle speed for normal operation, it is the linkage to that arm that needs help. There is a pivot/bell crank gizmo at the
head/valve cover with springs that often fail. Hard ware store springs work well. Jim

Thanks Rodney51, I will definitely use that image.
If anyone has some specific experience with the M Governor and it s known wear points it will help to know which bushings and shafts are a common problem and may be available. I do not seem to see a Governor "kit" for sale unless someone here knows of one.

Thanks Janicholson,....I have already refitted all the throttle to Governor linkage points in hopes that it would help. I am definitely going into that Governor.

Typical wear happens at the main spring holes. wear there and a spring tension reduction from age can add up. the holes can be
brazed shut and redrilled to be tighter. pivot pins for the weights can also be worn they should be free, but without real slop.
Jim

Weight holes, weight pins, bearing and sometimes bearing carrier on shaft, linkage in governor. throttle tube, shaft, pin and bushing. Fork that has the rear spring eye needs the needle bearings checked and shaft needle bearing pivots on checked for needle indentations. Fork needs to pivot smoothly. If weight holes or pins wear to much the weights can drag and give lazy response. I like to bush spring holes to give less movement of hand throttle from idle to off idle, but it has no effect on governor operation once spring has tension.

Some other things to check in addition to what has already been offered are :
Check for flat spots on the weight levers. These can be reshaped with a good file or carefully on a
belt sander. Also check the thrust washer #43 . If there are dimples worn into it from contact
from the weight levers you can turn it around if it has not already been turned. The pins in the
rocker assembly, #51 will have flat spots worn on them. If only very slight, leave them alone. If
more than that you can press or drive them out , turn half a turn, and press them back in. You need
to be real careful to have the pin 90 degrees to the rocker casting or the casting can be ruined. I
put a little more chamfer on the pins before replacing them. Hope this helps.
