Hi,

My cousin is looking at a 1979 IH154 LoBoy Tractor equipped with a front-end loader. From the picture I saw, I would say it has seen quite a bit of use. The asking price is $4,000.

It is my understanding that this tractor is rated at 14 HP. I have a 60 HP tractor which I'm sure is much more than my cousin needs for the 2 or 3 acres he will be playing around with (mowing, moving dirt, etc.). Still, I would think a tractor with a loader ought to have 30HP or better. And I would think $4,000 should buy more tractor than what he is looking at. What do you guys think?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a 154 with a IH 3260 belly mower. I cut about 5 acres with it and it is really a surprising little tractor. I rebuilt the whole tractor except transmission and it runs great. I don't know if I would want to put a loader on it. I have seen these advertised anywhere from $1800 to $2700.

The Cub 154 is basically a redesigned Cub. It has the same engine and transmission, but not the drop axles, front end, etc.

A loader for a 154 Cub is probably a $500-$1000 piece of equipment, and 154s in good condition will run up to $3000 for a really good one. For light duty this combo will be OK. If you are going to do heavy lifting, you do need more tractor. Other tractor brands with loaders (Fords are popular loader tractors) you can get a 30 hp tractor for about the same money.

But if you are working in tight quarters and the lifting weight is not too high, the 154 can really shine...IMHO...Regards...BB
