Hydraulic Leak 504 Utility

I bought a 504 Utility at auction. Suppose to have had a new hydraulic pump installed. The hydraulics screamed but the 3 point worked fine. I bought a loader and installed it. I guess it was too much for the pump because everything stopped working and started leaking hydraulic fluid out what appears to be a weep/drain hole in the bottom of the case. I replaced the pump today. Loader works fine and the 3 point but still have a stead leak coming from the hole. I looked at the CaseIH website and can't find a seal or anything that allow fluid to leak out. What's going on?

If there is no hole per say and not leaking a stream like it would if there is/was a hole then I suppose it could be a porous spot in the casting or a fine crack. If it looks like there was a slight bulge there, or it is under a gear that runs close to the bottom. I suppose a bearing ball or roller could have got under a gear causing a crack.

Somewhat of a long shot but here is a possible cause of your leak. Does you tractor have a TA? If so somewhere in the clutch housing the TA is in, there is a weep hole to drain fluid out of the direct TA clutch cavity. The direct clutch is a 7 in. diameter dry clutch. The odd shaped cover number 7 in the attached parts diagram is where this clutch is located. There is a possibility of a failure of 3 different seals which would allow fluid into the TA dry clutch cavity. I do not know the exact configuration of all the models but generally the hole is a drilled 3/16 or 1/4 inch hole. You might just want to pull that top cover off and see if things look oily in there. On the Farmall row crop models the cover is not terrible to access. I cannot speak to how the access is on a utility.

Looking closer the weep hole may be shown in your photo directly above the 2nd bolt head from the right edge of the photo. If that is it I am not sure what that is that is leaking on your tractor. I have to agree with Cat guy that some sort of internal damage went on there and caused a breach in the casting.

Used red MN is correct. Three possible seals can leak into the TA clutch housing. The weep hole is to allow oil to drip out in case of a seal leaking so the clutch can stay dry.

It would be a good idea to see IF YOU CAN determine where the fluid is coming into the cavity. This means if it is the front side or rear side. I also realize it may be difficult to tell. The reason is that to replace the seals that allow oil to come in to the back side it requires a major part of the TA to be disassembled. The seals I am talking about are shown on the attached picture, hopefully it is clear enough. They are shown by the 5th arrow from the right on the top side and 2nd arrow from right on the bottom. Where you see the shaft coming in on the right side of the photo that is where oil would come in at the front. In front of this dry cavity is another wet section that the PTO drive gears set in. The PTO drive shaft passes through a wet section below the TA. That is the reason for the weep hole, the wet area for the passage of the PTO shaft blocks any opening directly below the dry clutch cavity. FYI borescopes that connect to cell phone can be bought at a low cost $20 to $40, may be a good investment if it can help you pinpoint the leak location.

No t/a but with independent PTO drive can still leak into cavity. Not likely even with or without a independent PTO oil could follow the driveshaft forward from the transmission input seal if no T/A. If a transmission driven PTO and no T/A the only seal to leak is the transmission input seal. If it didn't come with a T/A and has a IPTO you could tap the hole for threads and plug it. Then check fluid level ever so often until oil levels out in the compartment. Have to purchase extra fluid though. Noticed in the past shady persons have tractors in auction with holes plugged with a T/A. If the 504 happens to have a reverser it is located in the same place as a T/A

Thanks. I was kind of thinking the same thing. Couldn't think of what it would hurt. I'm going to try it. It does have IPTO. I have another question. The serial number is 604-Y-FF making it a 62 model. I'm starting to think it's a 2504 because all the yellow paint under the hood and transmission. Data plate is very worn and don't show the model. What does the suffix's Y-FF mean?
