Farmall F-12 Fuel Pump Loses Prime

Hi,
I have been running the F-12 around nearly everyday since I got it going. But every time I go to start it it will fire weakly on the second crank but not enough to keep running. Then it will take another 20-30 cranks to fire right off and run great. I am thinking the fuel pump is losing prime. Does this sound right and what could be causing it? I replaced the diaphragm in the fuel pump and am probably going to pull the fuel pump. While I had it off I didn't know what else to look at.

Thanks,
Noah

Next time it wont start, remove the drain plug from the carb and crank it to see if the pump is delivering. Possibly the push rod is worn too short. The stroke is not very long so there can be no lost motion; with the push rod all the way retracted, you should feel the lever making contact with the push rod as you are installing the pump.

Thanks for the responses. I will have to look at the fuel pump and push rod closer tonight. Before I take it off I'll check and see if it is getting fuel when starting.

Thanks,
Noah

In my opinion, your issue is carburetor
and not fuel pump. There should be
sufficient fuel in the float bowl to start
the tractor and keep it running until the
fuel pump catches up. You need to find
out where the fuel in the float bowl is
going. Cracked or porous casting or ????.

Checked it tonight and the bowl was bone dry, so that is the culprit. I took out the main jet and the washer looked good but I tightened it up good and we'll see if that helped. It wasn't very tight when I took it off. I'm going to check it in the morning to see if the bowl held fuel overnight.

Thanks,
Noah
