cub wont start

I have a 64 cub. I went out and started today and it ran fine. I shut it off and now it doesnt do a thing when I pull on starter. battery shows 6 volts but when I try to start it drops to 4.5. The tractor ignition was left on recently and battery was recharged. I checked all connections, cleaned etc and still nothing. Any tips for trouble shooting would be appreciated. I am wondering if the battery was damaged when ignition was left on.

Check points for being burned, Load test battery Sounds like it is in need of a good charge then retest for load drop if so then new battery is in order. Check all connections from battery to starter for corrosion also.

Can the starter stick on cubs like it does on the bigger Farmalls? If so, put it in high gear and rock the rear wheels back and forth until the fan turns, then try it again.

It is possible that the starter drive gear is stuck on the ring gear on flywheel. Loosen the starter up and wiggle it around and the drive should unstick. Not positive that this is the problem but,it is very possible.

Not an uncommon problem with older cubs. Usually it is a problem with brushes that can be fixed in the moment by tapping the back side of the starter housing, but sometimes it seems to get stuck in a spot where pulling it, rotating the shaft, and reinstalling it will work.

starter is locked on the flywheel Take the mounting bolts out annd then slide the starter back and look at the bendix it should be retracted put back in an tighten the bolts starter should then enguage and turn the engine over

Some how I don't believe a stuck starter is going to read his 4.5 volts when he tries to start it so I would guess if his points are not burned and he has spark that the battery needs charged up or it needs to be charged then load tested to see if it is shot. Stuck starter will act like a dead battery but not give a 4.5 volt reading like he claims. And Yes when you say you pulled on stater. It does sound like you had a rope start lawn mower. So I can see why the confusion on that.

The confusion comes from not reading the post thoroughly, something I have been guilty of in the past. He didnt say anything wrong. Soon as I saw 6 volt, that ruled out a large swath of Cubs for me. There is a good many non-IH tractors that one (( pulls )) the starter on, so thats kind of a lame excuse.

Even EASIER, making sure the ignition switch is "OFF", put the transmission in high gear and grab a rear tire and VIGOROUSLY rock the tractor back and forth, this will pop a jammed starter drive loose, and you should be able to see the engine fan move a bit in both directions as it's being rocked if the engine isn't stuck.

(quoted from post at 22:05:22 01/27/22) Would burnt points prevent it from at least turning over?
f course not. Nothing in the ignition system can keep it from turning over. If it turns over and won't start, the ignition could be a problem. Yuor problem is any/some of: battery, cables, starter switch, starter itself and any of the connections between them.

Well today I put a crank on the cub and could not turn it over. I put some pb blaster in the cylinders and popped the crank handle a few times and it broke loose. What would cause it to all of a sudden freeze up. Would this be a starter stuck problem or something else. It started right up after that and ran fine. ????

the other posts told you to loosen the bolts on the starter as it was locked up you have a weak battery or bad connections or a bad Bendix start with battery connections have a fully charged battery
