H stuck in gear

A guy I know has a gas H and he said it is stuck in 2nd gear. He has a flip phone and not PC savvy, so I said I'd ask the guys on here what possibly is wrong with it. Someone told him the PTO is keeping it in gear, that don't sound right to me.

I tried to get more info from him, it was cold and windy so I gave up.

What is the most likely cause of it hung in gear, and what's the cure ??

Thanks

Sounds like gear shifter popped out of
the shifting fork to me. Does the gear
shifter move in a way that it
shouldn't do when in second, and no
matter how you move it, it stays in
second?
If so, remove pin from gear shifter,
and pull it up and out of its hole.
Use a BIG screw driver and work middle
shifting fork back into the neutral
position. With all three shifting
forks lined up in a row in neutral,
re-enstall the gear shifter in the
neutral position.
Cause for this to happen, is trying to
force it out of gear when there is
pressure on the pto shaft when it is
also in gear. Another cause is gear
shift pin has come out of one side or
the other of the hole it goes in. This
allows gear shifter to come up just a
little (enough to come up out of the
fork).
If this is not it (but likely), then
you got something else wrong.

Another cause, which is the most common, is a worn gear shifter tip. People tend to shift in a W pattern instead of an H, and that diagonal motion will allow the shifter to slip out of one gate while the gear is still partially engaged. The gear snaps back into the fully engaged position, and it's "stuck" in gear.

The cure is to weld up and reshape the tip of the gearshift, but as a stopgap measure you can shift more carefully and deliberately. Always straight back and forth, and "rake" side to side to make sure you're in neutral before selecting the next gear.

possibly easy quick fix, not permanent, would be to scotch the wheels, jack up one rear wheel and rock it a bit and they try to shift. my c does this sometimes, when i am in a hurry to shift and this will un stick it. hmmm maybe work for him

Other comments are correct but I will add this. Is it very cold where
you are? If so, the transmission may be full of frozen mix of oil and
water.

Easiest fix is to knock the soft plug out at the bottom of the lever where the lever pivots. then knock the other one out with the pin . Now you can see in the top align the rails with a screw driver. Now stick lever back in install pivot pin and new soft plugs. All is good till it happens again. If the lever looks worn then a weld up job is needed on the tip of the lever.

Thanks everyone for the advice and ideas. Like I said, it's not my tractor, I'll pass along the info. I'm hoping I don't get roped into helping work on it in the snow!!
