Fuse location IH 574-D

Can anyone tell me where the fuses are?
I accidentally shorted the ignition switch to the sheet metal while testing voltages and now the electrical system is dead.
Thanks in advance.

Generic info---From the Starter solenoid there should be a thick (10gauge or so) wire that is the major connect to the entire
tractor other than starting current. It should be connected to the large post where the battery connects. Test for power there.
If OK, follow it (there could be a fuse, or fuse link, in that wire. The far end of that wire should also have power. Continue
checking connections from that point until no power. Good luck, Jim

The only fuse I have seen on any of
the 74 series tractors tractors we
have now or had in the past, was located
on the dash under the steering
wheel. My memory is fuzzy from
getting the lights working on the
674, but I want to think it was
primarily a fuse for the lighting
circuit and possibly the fuel Guage
system. I would also be looking for
a burnt fuse link or possibly a now bad key switch. Are you absolutely sure your neutral safety switch is working properly ? A lot of ours have had the connection on the switch plug by clutch pedal over time go bad rendering it where it'll do nothing period.

In the diagram ..wore out.. posted there is no fusible
link shown however it may exist. The diagrams for your
machine are on pages 8 or 9 depending if you have an
internally regulated alternator or a externally regulated
alternator. The starter is shown in the lower left of the
diagram when placed so you can read the labeling on
it. On the post of the starter that the positive battery
connects to a red wire connects there and goes to the
right side of the charge indicator ..ammeter.. This is
where your ignition switch is getting its power. That
terminal has a jumper that takes power to a 3 terminal
junction block. Then from a different terminal of the
block power is fed over to the ignition switch by a light
blue wire. All of these locations should have power. If
not you have to figure out why. I would suggest that
you check the fist 6 inches or so of the red wire where
it connects to the starter. Grab it and pull it like you are
meaning to pull it off the tractor. The reason being is
that is where most fusible links are located. The inside
wire may be burnt away but the insulation will be there,
so pulling on it will determine if there is wire inside or if
it is burnt away. My apologies if you read wiring
diagrams well.
Edit: My wording is a little off on the connection from the ammeter to the switch. No time to correct it right now. Regardless, power should be to both sides of the ammeter and to the B terminal of the ignition switch.

The only fuse I know of is the one under the steering wheel for the lights right there on the dash. I would suspect a bad ignition switch or the clutch safety switch under the pedal. They are a junk cheap switch that is usually bypassed on most tractors I've ever had anything to do with either before we got them or afterwards. the ignition switch is easiest to get to if you remove that side piece right by switch below the dash a couple screws into the area right around the switch and tha side bolt to the hood and it is off. You can then reach right in under the dash to get the switch out to you. Those switches are pretty cheap too. I had to rewire our 574 after the switch went bad . I just used the ether switch to engage the stater and the run position of the ignition switch to allow it to come on and connect the alternator to the excite wire so it charges. This is on a diesel model like you are asking about. The entire IH wiring harnesses in tractors was that cheap poorly made cloth covered steel wire that was a terrible choice for a tractor. I have had to replace wires as they go bad on tractors to keep them working with that cloth crap. The 574 has several different junction connections that are poorly designed and poorly placed to get to on them.

Fuse is for lights only. Most likely you blew the amp meter.
Check for voltage on both terminals on amp meter.

I had thought they were behind the dash gauges and accessible thru the battery cover. But maybe that is the 85 and 95 series. Pete
23 should know,though! Mark.
