The method you describe should work. I had the remnants of a piece of pipe in a salvaged manifold I used on my B, and did just that. You could also cut off the pipe flush with the manifold, then take a cutoff disk in a Dremel to cut a gap in the remaining pipe and knock it out with a punch. I think I would try soaking it with your favorite penetrant and twisting it out first, though. The threads in the casting are far more robust than the threads on the pipe.
