We have a 1939 M, around the 200 one built. All serial numbers match. Dad bought it in the mid 1990s and we use it on the grain auger. What would cause road gear to fall out of gear? Have to hold foot on gear shifter when driving. Did 1939s come with lights or was that a option?

I think anything besides the basic tractor was considered an option in those days. There is a guy that sometimes brings an H to shows that is 100% option free which also means no rubber. Seems strange to see a tractor with no options from that time period.

Could be the springs, balls or shift fork. More chance of being the bearing on end of shaft in picture, internal teeth worn on gear with yellow number or input shaft teeth the
4th and 5th internal gear slides onto. Bearing in picture goes inside the input shaft. Removing the belt pulley gear box or cover where it goes to inspect could locate problem.

That's a easy, short two day job, to put that in,i am thinking its the bearing and and a new gear ,and new grease will get you going. This site should have em!

THE FARMALL DOCTOR in Red Power Magazine fixed an M last summer with that exact problem, popping out of 5th gear. He pulled the belt pulley gearbox or plate, looked over the bearing, spline engagement for 5th gear, made sure everything was in good shape, and then with his acetylene torch heated up and slightly bent the 4th/5th gear shift fork so it engaged 5th gear farther, the gears for 4th gear are around an inch thick, The Good Doctor only increased the 5th gear engagment a bit, 1/8 to 3/16.

You guys should ALL read your Red Power more completely, you'd all know this stuff!

I did read it,but didn't think, everybody could replicate what the Tractor Doctor does,If he replaces the bearing and such , and learns how to double clutch,it will last one more generation, easy!

Dang it I didn't know what I was missing only looking at the pictures.

I quit subscribing to red power magazine because it's all the same thing over and over and over. How many times can you rehash the history of the TA? They're going to find out.

Thanks for the information. Is there any way to get a copy of the magazine? Don't mine buying a single issue. Tractor has been sitting for 5 year with engine pulled for overhaul. What is your thoughts on adding live hydraulics? Dads wants it but I don't think it's needed. Heard cam gear needs replaced. Tractor will only be used for Tractor drive, plow alttle, 8 inch grain auger.
