Today, as I finished up bush hogging at dusk, I made a pass down beside a fencerow with my bush hog set real low. It was pretty thick with old grass and, with the throttle wide open, was giving the ’59, 140 a little bit of a work out. As it got darker, I noticed a 4” flame jumping out the top of the muffler. As it continued to get dark, I noticed the bottom chamber area of the muffler had a cherry glow to it. This is not normal, is it?
I have not checked timing or point gap or plugs yet, as I have not received my manual. Anyone have suggestions on what to check first?

As the others say, it's normal. Last fall I was using a Super 77 Oliver (I know, wrong board, but I have an H & a 300...) that I was running a 4 row corn stalk chopper with. Had the exhaust manifold, manifold pipe, mufler, and a bit of the top muffler pipe from cherry red to a strong dull red. Real fun thinking about those dry stalks flying all over the place.... That was a several hour workout for the poor 77, earned his keep that day.

..I remember a sky blue flame somewhat like a natural gas flame. A touch of yellow is unburned fuel? Thats with gas formulated back then. R

Thanks everyone! I can definitely enjoy this since everyone let me know they were designed to handle this. With the worry of parts failure gone, that howling sure did sound good!
Thanks again!

Our 706 with the 291 gas does that too. You should see it when I'm pullin' up a steep hill with the spreader full. I once ran a 310 German diesel out of fuel at night. Right before it killed there were 3-foot flames shooting out the muffler.

Keep havin' fun! A flame out the exhaust and glowing manifold/muffler are normal under full RPM/full load operation. Means only you've got a well-tuned engine that's working hard!

Just keep an eye on the water temperature, and let the motor run with no load at about 1/4 throttle for a couple minutes to cool before shutting it down.

when they get worked hard, you'll be surprised what shows up in the dark.I've had red flame about 2' up from a short straight pipe and than when you work near a barn or hay stack and see the sparks flying towards the barn!!! That is why you do the hard work in daylight, don't see the red..
