Super A Head Gasket Problem?

I noticed a little oil scum floating on top of my coolant and starting thinking head gasket. I opened the upper engine oil draincock to see if the oil level was rising and sure enough it was high. It it over a quart high! (engine cold) Last change I put in the correct 5 quarts.
Question; am I checking the oil level correctly or is this excess due to drain down of the oil filter? Maybe I should warm the engine to refill the paper cartridge type filter before checking?
Thanks,
David

If your oil is clean or even black, but not milky, then you do not have coolant in it.

If you have hydraulics, your hydraulic pump might be leaking hydraulic fluid into the crankcase, causing your oil level to be higher than normal . . .

Thanks Glen,
I had not thought of that possibilty. I'll check the touch control oil level.

Did you change the filter with the last oil change? If so, there could only be 5 qts. total in the crank case. If there is a quart of coolant in the motor I would think the oil would be real milky looking, also the radiator would be a low. Just a few thoughts, Daniel.

Thanks Daniel,
Yes I did change the filter last time and set the oil level with the engine warm so the filter was full.

The oil is clear like new oil and the coolant level has not dropped. I'll try warming it up and then look at the color of the oil.
