350u manure pump

I have quite a bit to think about
as it comes to the future of the
350. While the motor runs, the
rest of the machine is not in good
condition. As soon have posted
earlier in the week the entire
back half looks like it was used
to store calf scours. Before I
left i dumped 5 gallons of diesel
fuel in the rear end to help break
up as much of the crud as
possible. The main and lower gear
sets look good still, and with the
diesel the gears on the main shaft
slide on the shaft well. None of
the gears SEEM pitted, chipped, or
broken, however with them still in
the machine it's impossible to
tell if there still good. Other
than every seal and bearing being
destroyed the only thing for sure
that is no good is the main drive
gear. On top of needing a total
back half rebuild/ replacement I
found the hydraulic system to be
in big trouble. When I pulled the
hydraulic manifold that sits over
the transmission cover I seen that
the oil had sparkles in it so I
knew there was some metal in the
system doing bad things. When I
drained the manifold out, instead
of having a nice clean oily cavity
the bottom was covered in sludge
and by the small return line that
comes in from under the dash,
there was a silver dollar sized
pile of metal (pic#1) as I scraped
the sludge out of the bottom of
the manifold the bottom 1/32 or so
was silver in color. I had thought
that most of the ram seals were
just old and worn, however it
would seem that the seals have
been getting eaten away by years
of metal flake flowing through out
the entire system. I was going to
tear the pump off the front of the
tractor and bring it home with me
to rebuild but I ran out of time
before I had to be back to work. I
was figuring that one of the
bushings went out and the
impellers are eating the side of
the case up, but it just occurred
to me that more likely my failing
leaky power steering system is
most likely the culprit. With all
these problems with this machine I
only see 3 options. 1 get ready to
sign a black check and pour 8-10k
plus and 60 to 100 hours into a
total rebuild. 2 see it as I bout
a $1500 loader and backhoe
attachment that came with a free
parts tractor with a running motor
that I can use for parts when I
put the loader/ backhoe in n a
totally different machine. Or 3,
part the entire machine out and
get what I can out of it to by a
better machine that comes with a
loader and backhoe. I would like
to know how the rest of you would
proceed if you were in this boat.
I'd also be interested to hear of
other options I may not have
already considered.

A few options are available to you. 1 Go through it and know what you have. 2 Find a donor and mix and match. 3 Part it out and garner what you can. 4 If not using this tractor a lot just wash it out put the needed bearings in it with the gear and run it keeping it out of the weather to help prevent water problems in the future. 5 junk it and get a better machine. Depending on the amount of use you are going to give a backhoe I would get a better backhoe. Old small tired ones get real old real fast. We had an old Shawnee on the 3pt of an 830 Case worked and so did we. It got so we could dig as fast by hand as it did. When we were kids 5-10 years old it was faster. When we got to be late teens we could dig as fast as it did.

I have a slightly different take on this. There are a lot of uses for a loader, and a better tractor with a good loader is probably what you want to own. How you get there from where you are now might be a coin toss. Unless you need a backhoe on a fairly regular basis, you might be better off to hire someone to bring their expertise and good backhoe or an excavator to do those jobs.

I've seen the damage a loader does to the steering on those tractors and I'm assuming your transmission damage may be related to the weight of the back hoe. Even if you fix the 350U I would find a bigger tractor for that work.

You cant make this unit serviceable. I own a 350U and they are good if cared for. That one needs a scrap yard. Finding a 350U with life remaining, or a 350 Utility with a bad engine, or a different model like a 460U would be proper. Do capture the value of any good parts in the old one. Jim

Not being real familiar with this set up, I had seen somewhere that this loader backhoe set up was only for the 300u and the 350u. If I am understanding your post correctly you are saying that I can slide this setup onto a 460u as well? And if that is the case what other ih models will the pippin loader/hoe fit on?

I believe any utility loader in the HP range of a 350 or 460 can be made to adapt. I do not know the answer to the slide right on question. Jim
