was bushhogging an smelling plastic thought neibors were burning plastic...tractor started sputtering in tall grass pulled out of grass was gonna look at carb an noticed starter was smoking turned off tractor and heard starter try to engage ring gear....started tractor an it fired up...ran it on home...starter was hot,, grease was ouzing out of it..i dont here any grinding....how do you test solinoid, cant spell today..an do you think the ing. switch is bad like it was trying to start while running...ring gear had alittle fresh licks on it...have not opened starter yet...ing. switch is only a couple of years old...china junk...i wish i could find a old school one an selnoid ,dont see any name on selnoid, it was on tractor when i got it.. could a selnoid do that or more likly bad switch...or do you think it could be something in starter.....where do yall think i should start....thanks in advance...........dewy

I would say it would be rare occurrence when a solenoid decides to just contact out of the blue and stay contacted. Do you think it is possible the starter was running the whole time? You did not say how long you had run the tractor. Did the starter stay engaged when you restarted it to head home? When you shut it off at home did it stay engaged then or did you have to unhook the battery. I would lean towards the ignition switch as well.

wouldnt i here it if engaged the whole time..i did unhook battery when home..cause it was so hot..didnt here any thing...took starter off also oily looking on starter gear area,,ring gear an flywheel didnt look real oily..thick grease boiled out of back plate of starter..i dont what to tear up ring gear...i never heard anything exceot when first turned off tractor in field..sounded like it engaged or maybe it disengaged...how would you know if it stays engaged.also where to buy reliable ing. switch..will look at ones on this site..wish i could find old stock...would any thing in starter keep it engaged...thanks in advance.....dewy

You need to actually test for voltage going to the solenoid from the ignition switch so you can correctly diagnose it. Otherwise you you wasting money, guessing and throwing parts at it. You can use a test light, but a volt meter would be best. Since you got the starter off, I would get it rebuilt, because it will be trashed inside. Mark.

what am i looking for, ..is the voltage suppose to only be 12v when turning key to start then when released no voltage on selenoid....also what would be trashed in the starter...it smelled like burnt wires...both the solenoid an starter...the only thing in the starter is brushes an amerture an fields....how would you correctly diagnose switch to solenoid............dewy

Sorry if any of this is over simplifying the description but as Mark said only time you should have power to the small terminal on the solenoid ..usually marked S.. is when the ignition key is turned to the start position. When it is released to the run position there should be no power there. Power to the solenoid where the cable from the battery connects to the large terminal will off course alway be there. And without that small terminal energized by the key the large terminal that connects to the starter terminal strap will not have power either.

Well, used red mn answered about the voltage to the solenoid. Your starter is cooked-burnt up, and likely the bushings wore out also. With all that heat the windings are likely to short out, if not already. If you can smell it, it needs rebuilt/ replaced. It was running a long time with the engine running, and that is a bad thing. Mark.
