Farmall C electrical

Hi Gentlemen,
I have finally solved the electrical problem on my 1948 Farmall C Tractor. 1st the new alternator was too high 100 AMPS. current jumping through the old wiring. Rewired with proper wiring and tractor runs nice, but have 2 problems the AMP. meter doesn't work and the indicator light doesn't work. Checked the voltage at the alternator, and the battery with engine running 13.4 volts. Thank you all for you positive comments, they were very helpful and I would have never tackled the project without them.

If the Ammeter had 30% more current flowing through it, It may have been ruined. If the 100 amp alternator is still on there Use a 100 amp rated meter to replace the failed one. 13.4 is not a good charging voltage. 14.2 is more like it. Use an analog (needle) volt meter to check it at 3/4 throttle. The battery needs to be fully charged before these tests. Jim

Here is a diagram of what you wiring should look like.
If you are using the original pull rod starter switch the wire shown going up to the left of the ammeter should go directly to the starter stud. I see in your other post some discussion about a fuse or circuit breaker this is the wire where that should be placed. In my opinion a fuseable link is a better way to protect your wiring during shorts. I also see in your other post you were getting a diode to put in the energizing circuit to the alternator terminal 1. In this post you say your indicator light does not work. You should really only install one or the other. Also as said on the diagram if the charge-discharge of the ammeter is backwards the wires need to be swapped side to side. A ..down and dirty.. test to see if your alternator is working is to place a screwdriver shank against bearing cap on the center of the back of the alternator and see if it sticks which indicates that it should be charging.

I am not saying the wires being backwards on your gauge is your problem. If it is and you have lights with the engine not running when you turn them on it would show charge instead of discharge. And then when you start the engine it should swing to discharge. Did you try the suggestion with the screwdriver?

used red MN,
I haven't tried the screwdriver and will do it today. The amp. meter doesn't do anything and I plan on changing it out for a better one.
