Use heavy oil 85 or so in the transmission of my new to me Farmall 504 row crop?

Not if you want your hydraulics to work. That'd be like trying to suck a McDonald's milkshake through a straw.
The 504 uses its transmission and rear end housings as the hydraulic reservoir. You need to use hydraulic fluid, preferably a variant of Hy-Tran or something listed as compatible.
